ANNOUNCING JUNIOR NEWS
AND PERTINENT INFORMATION

Dear Class of 2008,

Welcome to your junior year!!  This year will be an exciting and busy time for you.  This will be the year to gather information from people you know, from college contacts, from websites and publications, and from college visits.  You will begin to navigate the college selection process this year.

You will take the  ACT college admission test this year and you will want to make the best grades possible since your admission to four year schools will be based on both your cumulative GPA and ACT composite.  You will need to visit me in the guidance office and "check out" what is available to you.    Remember, it is your responsibility to seek out these opportunities.

I am here to help you in this process.  Make plans now to visit colleges when PVHS is not in session.

WHAT SHOULD I MAJOR IN?   Where can I find current information on careers?

HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT I WOULD BE GOOD AT?

If you want to find out what would be a good occupation for you based on your strengths, you should consider taking  the Strong Interest Inventory or the Myers Briggs Interest Inventory.  You can call the One Stop Career Center at Jeff. State to schedule to take one of these assessments.  (205) 856-7922.

Strong Interest Inventory-This assessment is a useful tool in deciding a future occupation.  The test is useful for young people who are undecided about what occupation to pursue.  The test helps to identify occupations that are in tune  with individual preferences.  The cost for this assessment is  $30 and takes approximately 45 minutes.

Myers Briggs Interest Inventory- The Myers Briggs Type Indicator shows how a person will typically behave or react in organizations, leadership, management and multicultural settings.  The cost for this assessment is $5 and takes approximately 20 minutes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

v     GRADUATION CREDITS:  The Class of 2008 must earn a minimum of 28 credits in required and elective courses to graduate in the Spring of 2008.  This means failing no more than 4 credits during ALL grades 9-12.  If all courses are passed, a student will earn 32 credits.  If a student fails a required course, it must be retaken.

v     FAILED CLASSES

·        Putting a failed course back into your schedule will only be possible if you are not behind in credits.  If you are not behind in credits, you can make up a failed class instead of taking an elective.

·        Summer School and/or Night School is another means of making up a failed course.  In order for classes to be held, a minimum enrollment must be met.  Consequently, there is no guarantee that night school and/or summer school will be held for a certain course.
